そろそろこのスレも放棄した方が良い様に思うんですが、どうでしょうか?

王公族の英語での呼び方について前から気になっていて、英語の資料を探して
いた。まず外務省に目をつけたが収穫なし。最近、朝鮮総督府
(Government-General of Chôsen) が総監府時代から出している英語の年次報告
が使えることに気付いた。

Annual Report on Reforms and Progress in Chosen (Korea)

1910-11年版の Appendix A に 王公族の根拠となった併合条約が載っている。

Article III. His Majesty the Emperor of Japan will accord to Their
Majesties the Emperor and ex-Emperor and His Imperial Highness the
Crown Prince of Korea and Their Consorts and Heirs such titles,
dignity and honour as are appropriate to Their respective ranks, and
sufficient annual grants will be made for the maintenance of such
titles, dignity and honour.

Article IV. His Majesty the Emperor of Japan will also accord
appropriate honour and treatment to the members of the Imperial House
of Korea and their heirs, other than those mentioned in the preceding
Article, and the funds necessary for the maintenance of such honour
and treatment will be granted.

さらに、八月二十九日付けの寺内正毅総監の諭告が Appendix E:
Proclamation of Annexation by Resident-General (Issued on August 29,
1910.) として載っている。関連する部分は以下の通り。

Hereafter the Emperor of Korea shall be known by the title of His
Imperial Highness Yi Wang (Prince Yi), and the Crown Prince shall be
called Prince Heir, so that the hereditary title shall endure forever,
while the Ex-Emperor shall be given the title of His Imperial Highness
shall receive the treatment of Princes of the Blood and Their annual
grants shall be as munificient and the same in amount as heretofore.

munificient は munificence の誤りと思われる。アジア歴史資料センターで拾っ
た原文は以下の通り。

自今前韓国ノ皇帝陛下ハ昌徳宮李王殿下ト称セラレ皇太子ハ王世子トナリテ後
嗣長ヘニ相継承シ萬世無窮タルヘク太皇帝陛下ハ徳寿宮李太王殿下ト称セラレ
竝ニ皇族ノ礼遇ヲ賜ハリ其ノ秩俸ノ豊厚ナル皇位ニ在スノ時ト異ルナカルヘシ

見比べてみると、「昌徳宮」に対応する文言が英文にないなど、あまり忠実な
訳ではない。条約じゃないからいい加減なのかもしれない。注目すべきは、併
合後の敬称が His Imperial Highness となっていること。漢語だと皇帝から王
へ明白な格下げだけど、英文では、Majesty から Highness へと、君主じゃな
くなっただけで、Imperial が維持されている。

本文の I. General の 2. Annexation の D. Treatment of Ex-Imperial
Family of Korea (pp.17-18) にも関連する記述があるので写してみる。

In connection with the Annexation, His Majesty the Emperor of Japan,
being extremely anxious to promote the prosperity of the ex-Imperial
Family of Korea and to accord due and appropriate honours to the
Sovereign of that country and his relatives, other Imperial rescripts
were promulgated on Annexation day, by which the Korean Emperor, being
thereafter invested as Ō, (Wang in Korean) "Prince", is to be known by
the name of the Li-O (or Yi Wang in Korean) of the /Shotoku/ Palace;
and the Crown Prince is to be called Ōseishi or "Prince Heir," so that
the hereditary title should endure forever; while the Emperor Father
is to be given the title of Tai-Ō, r "Father Prince", being hereafter
known by the name of the Li Tai-O (Yi Tai-Wang) of the /Tokusu/
Palace. Their consorts are to be given the titles, respectively, of
Princess, Princess Heir, and Grand Princess. The aforesaid Princes and
Princesses are also to receive the title of "Imperial Highness" and
the treatment of Imperial Princes or Princesses of the Blood. Their
annual grants are to be sufficient and the same as hitherto, the total
amount being 1,500,000 /yen/, defrayed from the annual budget of the
Government-General of Korea. Members of the ex-Imperial Family of
Korea other than those mentioned above, such as a step brother of
Prince Li or his uncle, are also to be treated as Imperial Princes or
Princesses of the Blood, receiving the title of "Imperial Highness";
and for these two relatives of Prince Li, a grant of 840,000 /yen/ is
to be given out of the Imperial Donation Fund respectively for the
maintenance of their households.

With regards to the management of the household of Prince Li's
family. an organic regulation of the Household Office was promulgated
by a decree of the Imperial Household Department of Japan, issued in
December 1910, by while Prince Li's Household Office was brought under
the supervision of the Minister of the Imperial Household
Department. The fixed number of the Household Office was specified as
273, about half the number of those employed in the former Imperial
Household Department of Korea. A reduction of about 220,000 /yen/ has
been made in the expenses of Prince Li's Household on account of the
diminution of the employees and the abolition of numerous court
ceremonies, so that the sum of 1,500,000 /yen/, designated as the
annual grant for Prince Li's Household, should be quite a liberal
allowance as compared with that previously granted. In order to
maintain uniform control of the administration of Korea, the business
of Prince Li's Household Office and its employees was brought under
the jurisdiction of the Governor-General of /Chosen/.

// で囲った部分はイタリック。誤植が一箇所。Emperor が Fmperor となって
いる。

こちらもやはり Imperial Prince となっている。

1911-12年版には王公族に関する節がなく、わずかに Introduciton で言及され
るのみ。ここでの記述を見ると Their Highnesses Prince /Li/ Junior and
Prince /Li/ Senior と the Heir Presumptive となっていて Imperial の文字
がない。

あと、古い Japan Yearbook も若干参考になる。控えをとってないので以下は
うろ覚え。要確認。初期は王公族は Korea の章に記述されていたが、後には皇
族に続いて説明されている。日本語と朝鮮語の読みが混在していたのが、最終
的には日本語読みで統一される。後期には His Highness を使っており、
Imperial の文字はない。王と公は区別されてなかったと思う。

The Japan Year Book から王公族関連の記述。全号見たわけじゃないので、目
ぼしい変化を見つけたのだけ。

1921-22年版では Chapter XXXVI Chosen (Korea) の The Royal House of
Korea という節に記述してある。短いので全部写す。

The former Emperor of Korea is now known by the title of His Imperial
Highness Yi Wang (Prince Yi), and Prince Heir. Their Highnesses
receive the treatment of Princes of the Blood and their annual grants
remain same as before the annexation, i.e. en 1,500,000. In April 1920
the Prince Heir married in Tokyo Princess Masako, daughter of Prince
Nashimoto.

王公族とは関係ないけど、関東大震災前なのに、Chapter III に
Earthquakes, Volcanoes and Mineral Springs が置かれていて、やたら地震に
詳しいのに驚いた。

続いて1930年版。Chapter VI Imperial Court に記述されて、皇族と一体化し
ている。Korea の章では言及なし。皇族に続いて、Royal House of Korea とい
う節が置かれている。ただし Imperial の文字がない。固有名詞は、Yi,
Prince Gin, Princess Masako, Princess Im, Princess Tokukei, Prince Yi
Kang, the late Grand Prince Yi など一貫性がない。

そのすぐ後に皇室典範 (The Imperial House Law) が翻訳してある。「皇族女
子ハ王族又ハ公族ニ嫁スルコトヲ得」とした増補 (Additional Rule) では以下
のように、「王族」「公族」を翻訳しないまま。

A female member of the Imperial Family can marry a male member of
Ozoku or Kozoku (former Royal Family of Korea).

1943-44年版では、The Imperial Court が冒頭で置かれ、章番号を付けずに特
別扱いされている。大東亜戦争に割くページが多くてまさに戦時体制。

皇族に対しては H.I.M. と H.I.H. が律儀に付けられている。皇族に続いて
Royal House of Chosen が説明されている。こちらは H.H. でちゃんと差をつ
けている。項目が立っているのは、H.H. Prince Ri (Gin), H.H. Princess Ri
(Masako), H.H. Princess In, H.H. Prince Ri (Ken), H.H. Princess Ri
(Yoshiko), H.H. Prince Ri (Ko), H.H. Prince Ri (Gu), H.H. Princess Ri
(Sanshu), H.H. Princess Ri, H.H. Princess Kin。日本語読みに統一されてい
る。脚注で以下のように断っている。

The house name of the Chosen Royality is pronounced "Yi" in Chosen,
but here it is given as "Ri" according to Nipponese pronunciation.

最後のの二人は高宗の側室。李氏、金氏と朝鮮の姓になっている。一方、
Princess Ri (Sanshu) は、侯爵朴泳孝の孫の賛珠だが、Boku ではなく Ri と
なっている。王公家軌範には特に姓の規定はないけど。
